Wheelchair Racer Hope for Paralympics

Having recently returned from the World Championships in New Zealand with two gold medals for wheelchair racing, it’s no surprise Hannah Cockroft is one of Britain’s brightest hopes for next year’s Paralympic Games.

The 18 year old from Leeds, who currently works as a volunteer for Leeds City Council, also broke seven world records within a week just last year.

Her achievements are all the more impressive considering she only took up wheelchair racing five years ago after taking part in a have-a-go session at a university open day.

Looking back on the past year Hannah commented: “What a year!  I don’t know what to say really but I broke seven world records in eight days and it was all a bit mental.

“After that it was all hard training up to New Zealand and I went there for the experience really.  I ended up getting two gold medals – everything just worked out really well!  I don’t think it’s sunk in yet!”

Hannah adds: “Racing just seems like a bit of fun for me and like a hobby.  I’m just doing something I enjoy.”

As well as training for the 2010 Paralympics Hannah is also about to begin studying for a sports degree at University.   With so much ahead the inspirational teenager has a promising future to look forward to
