For over 30 years, Allied Mobility have been designing and manufacturing wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs) that are made for more – more freedom, more independence, more self-discovery.
Previously leading a super active career in the Army, Nick Wilson spent 14 years deployed on operations across the world, but after developing a spinal condition that causes chronic nerve pain, Nick became a full-time wheelchair user – leaving him with many questions surrounding his sense of self:
“When it got to the point I needed to be in the wheelchair in 2023, it was very much a crisis of identity and purpose – what do I do now?
Even from how do I date, how do I earn money, what do I do day-to-day, what will I enjoy doing? Because the things that I used to enjoy doing – hiking up mountains and doing really adventurous stuff, I can’t do anymore.”
Redefining Adventure on Snowdon
Luckily, it didn’t take long for Nick to rediscover his passion for the outdoors. At the beginning of 2024, he began working on a project to become the first wheelchair user to achieve a solo ascent of Mount Snowdon – one of the UK’s highest mountains.
Fast forward to July 2024, he reached the summit, unassisted, in a purpose-built powerchair that helped him redefine what adventure as a disabled person can look like.
Telling us about his journey to the top, Nick said:
“It was a prototype chair called Rock Climber and it had me clambering over half metre high boulders, nearly throwing me out a couple of times. We filmed it, created a documentary of it and it actually won Best Feature Film Documentary at the Northampton Film Awards earlier this year in 2026.”
A New Sense of Self and Purpose
Three years on from becoming a full-time wheelchair user, Nick has reinvented himself as a disabled adventurer and content creator, using his @disabled.adventurer social media channels to share his travels, experiences and insights. He explains:
“I’ve started creating access videos which has now become a not-for-profit business. So, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind, I’ve not done things the right way necessarily, but I’ve definitely found out a lot about myself. Not just my identity, but also the purpose of where I want to go, what I want to do and how I can be of value to my local community and society generally.”
On the Road to More with a WAV
Nick credits his drive-from WAV, Ford Dream™, as a key factor in helping him rebuild his confidence and independence as a new wheelchair user. By making travel simple and accessible, Dream™ has enabled him to regain a sense of control and freedom in his day-to-day life.
“Getting the WAV has transformed things – at the push of a button, tailgate goes up, ramp comes down, you roll in, it all closes up and off you go!”
However, the simplicity of using a WAV goes far beyond transport for Nick. Dream™ has helped him reclaim not just mobility, but his sense of purpose and hope for the future. He explains:
“There are no words. How can you explain to someone the difference, the gravity, or just how much a WAV changes your life? I wouldn’t know apart from just to say it was one of a handful of things that literally saved my life.
My WAV is freedom. It’s independence. I can now build a business, so I can be financially independent. I can pay taxes. I can be more of a valuable asset to society when society thinks disabled people do nothing; we don’t work and all the rest of it.”
How to Find a WAV That’s Made for More
Having found an accessible vehicle that has helped him to do more independently, Nick shares his advice for new wheelchair users and disabled people who have a standard car but want to get more from their vehicle:
“I’d suggest that people check out Allied Mobility. They have simplified a lot of their terminology and a lot of the confusing details and information that’s out there.
They also have years of knowledge and experience, and they know what they’re talking about. So, definitely check out the guys at Allied Mobility because they do care and they’re great at what they do.”
